Easter Bonnet Tutorial and Pre-Primer Sight Word Sheets

Every year my son's school has an Easter Bonnet Parade.  Each child is supposed to make a bonnet and then they parade around the outside of school to show off their bonnets.  Then they pick one winner from every level to be the winner.  The winner usually gets a treat bag as the prize.  This year Liam wanted an Angry Birds hat.  He also wanted it blue because that is his favorite color.  Here is what I started with.

Here are my supplies.

 Liam wanted a blue hat so I painted the hat blue.

 More paint. 

 I got styrofoam eggs so I could paint them the colors I needed.  While the blue paint was drying I started painting the eggs.

 More paint.

 I added straw to the hat (of course it had to be blue).

 The eggs are starting to come to life.  Can you tell yet what I am making?

 Ta da!!!!! Here it is!  Pigs with Angry Birds!

 Liam loves it.  He keeps asking to wear it.

Lunchbox Linky and Phonics Worksheets

My lunch is at 11:00.  I get from 11:00 to 11:30 to have lunch, however that counts dropping the students off at the cafeteria and making sure everything is ok before heading back to my classroom to eat.  So really 20 minutes it comes down to.   Here was my breakfast/lunch for today.

Everyday I use my cute butterfly lunch box.  It is a great size.  I can put just about anything in it.  I always have a yogurt with granola.  Sometimes I eat it for breakfast and some days I have it during lunch.  Today I packed a Smart Ones for my lunch with the yogurt.  I thought it was strange that the film was only stuck to a little area of the meal, but I still popped it into the microwave and warmed it.  Then once it was finished I pulled the film completely off and was ready to start chowing down, but then I smelled something horrible.  It smelled like pee!  Yep, seriously, pee. Ewwwww.  I just couldn't get past the smell so I threw it away.  I ended up eating the yogurt and then I went to the cafeteria to get mac and cheese.  Most days I pack but when I am feeling lazy I eat the cafeteria food.  Their food is actually pretty tasty.

Teaching sight words is important for reading fluency.  My kindergarteners are expected to know 126 sight words by the end of the year.  126 is a lot of words!  I am always looking for new and exciting ways for the my students to practice/learn their sight words.  I thought I would host a party so everyone could find sight word ideas all in one spot instead of searching and searching for them.  I hope you join my party and give everyone some ideas of how you teach sight words and how you keep sight words new and exciting throughout the year.  Please feel free to blog about this linky.  The more people that join the party, the more ways we will have to teach sight words and get the students to learn them.

Dental Health Ideas and Sight Word Hop

Dental Health and Sight Word Hop

This week my kiddos are learning about Dental Health.  Here are some of the things we did. 

 

Read some stories about teeth.

 We made a fresh clean mouth.  I have also copied the teeth pattern on yellow paper and had the students "brush" their teeth white with white paint.  Here is a FREEBIE!!!!  Here is the pattern for the mouth.

 Completed a writing about how the Dentist is your friend.

 Practiced brushing teeth using the bottom of a pop bottle (looks like a molar) and shaving cream.  (I have learned only to put the smallest bit on the molar of shaving cream or it is really really messy).

 I remind the students to use little circles when brushes and to get into all the little spots.

 The students really enjoy brushing their molar.

 We practice flossing.  We used half of an egg carton and a piece of yarn.  I showed them how to wrap the yarn/floss around their finger and how to wiggle the floss down each tooth. 

Another activity we completed was stretching out a sentence together about Dental Health.  We decided to write our teeth our healthy and then the students had to illustrate the sentence.  They had to show me how their teeth were healthy or what they could do to keep them healthy.

We also watched two cartoon movies about Dental Health and have a Dentist coming in to talk with the students.

Sight Word Hop

Today I had my students practice sight words by hopping them.  I partnered the kiddos up and then I made a trail around the room.  I assigned one partner to read the words and the other one to be the referee.  I reminded the referees not to tell the answer to their partner but to help by reminding them to sound it out.  Then I had the students start on the trail.  Once the first group reached a certain point, I let the next group go.  After the partners went, they walked back around to the front and the opposite partner read the words.  The students LOVE doing this.  Plus it motivates them to get the words quickly so they can hop around the trail faster.
