Robots, Sight Words, Phonograms, and Beginning Sounds

Another week is over. The kiddos are at home with their parents and I am home with my family!  It has been a wild week with it being a full moon.  Here are some of the things we did last week...

Our reading buddies came on Friday to read with us.  Every class at our school has partnered up with another class in a different grade level to be reading buddies.  My class is partnered with 3rd grade buddies.  All the students look forward to reading with their buddy. We try to meet with our buddies twice a month.

I added a new center to my ABC Center.  Beginning Sound iPads.  I printed out and laminated the letters that we have covered and the students then match the picture (app) to the iPad.

Practicing our letters and sounds.  We are practicing writing the letter correctly on the lines.

My students are having trouble with their sight words.  I decided to print off the sight words to have the students rainbow write them.  Then we added them to our Poem Notebook.

And more sight words...

We made our robot hat for the letter R.  The kiddos loved making these this week!

We also practiced our oral language/oral writing.  I have taught them gestures to help them remember the beginning of a sentence begins with an uppercase and the end of a sentence ends with an end mark.  When the kiddos do Teach, Okay!  They practiced their sentences using college talk.  College talk is talking in a complete sentence.  Then I asked for students to share their sentence with the class.  Here is a video of one of my girls.

(I like to go to music.)

I am loving the different WBT strategies.  I just know by using these techniques that I will have the smartest class!

Week 5- Moose, Apples, and Johnny

Another exciting week in my class!  Very busy finishing up assessments for mid-terms and getting all the curriculum in.  Here are some of the things we did this week!

We learned the letter M.  Moose, monkey, and mangos!  We made our weekly hat!

Aren't those hats just adorable?!

Next we started our Reading Notebooks.  I am so excited about these.  I purchased the Interactive Reading Journal from the amazing Deanna Jump.  We have been going over fiction and nonfiction so I thought it would be the perfect time to start our journals.

We learned what nonfiction and fiction means using the PowerPix for them.  Then we added this activity to our notebooks.  I can't wait to add more to them.  I love how it has the standards on the activities.

Next we had an apple tasting.  We tasted the 3 different kinds of apples.  The red, yellow, and green apples.  After we tried them, the students had to color the color of their apple the color they liked the most.  Then we graphed the apples to see what our class liked the most. (Oops, I forgot to take a picture of the graph).  I got the Apples Anchor Charts from Mrs. Hoffer's Spot.

Next we talked about Johnny Appleseed.  I made the same craftivities as I used last year.  Check them out here.  Then we made the Johnny Appleseed hats!!  My kiddos LOVE making hats.

Next we talked about the Seasons of an apple tree.  (Apple Anchor ChartWe added things to the chart that happen in the Fall.  Learning about Fall is always difficult in Florida since it is still 90 degrees out and our trees don't lose their leaves.  I really think this anchor chart will help the students learn the seasons better.

The students had a blast learning about apples and Johnny Appleseed.  I am so proud of my students because they are doing so well with our Reading program too!

Lastly, my little boy is growing up way too fast!!  He thinks he should be able to walk.  Check out him standing.

Week 4- Short and Sweet

This week was short and sweet!  Monday we had off for Labor Day and Thursday we had the day off for Rosh Hashanah.  Yes, it was a silly week of school with all those days off and no, we don't have that big of a Jewish population but we have to follow the District's calendar.  So, we had Thursday off too.  Even though it was a short week, we still had lots if learning to do.  We learned the letter K, took a test in math, and learned about apples.  Here are some pictures of our week.

Every morning we begin with our alphabet song that goes with our reading program. We use the Read Well program. Each morning I pick a student to point to the letters while the entire class sings the song.

I decided to go with 10 different centers this year.  I am constantly trying to think what would be beneficial for the students at the centers. Here are some of them in action.
The students are playing Teach Me Kindergarten.

Rhyming puzzle cards.

Tracing pictures and then they color them.

The students get lined paper and practice writing the alphabet.

The students cover the letter with Play Doh.

We also made a king crown for the letter K.

We also did some apple activities.  We color and covered an apple.

We sequence an apple plant.

This week I also had to assess my students because on Wednesday mid-terms go home.   It seems like we just started school so I can't believe I already have to reassess them.  Boy!!!  I must be getting old because time goes so fast anymore.  ðŸ˜ƒ  After I reassessed my students' letter knowledge I had them write their names on my letter banners of the knew 100% of them.  I have an uppercase and lowercase banner.  I am SO excited that some of my students we able to write their name on the banner.  I think we must be off to a great year!

On Friday I got a little surprise from my mom.  Isn't she so sweet!!

Thanks for checking out my week!
